There are no shortcuts to thoroughly cleaning your windows, but there are some things that you can do to make it easier. In today’s post, replacement window and doors installation company Renewal by Andersen of Kansas City shares window cleaning tips you probably didn’t know.
Use Separate Interior and Exterior Scrubbers
Use separate interior and exterior scrubbers when cleaning your windows. Windows are dirtier on the outside from exposure to dust, pollen and other particles, as well as bird droppings. Separate scrubbers keep outdoor pollutants, and possibly bacteria, away from the interiors. Do the same for wipers, detailing rags and buckets.
Use Common Household Products
You can easily find various types of cleaning products designed specifically for windows. Some of them are actually good, but not exactly cost-effective. Don’t let that stop you from cleaning your windows. In fact, you might be surprised to know that many household products can help keep your windows clean just as well as commercially-available ones.
Most types of low-maintenance windows and sliding doors can be cleaned using liquid dish detergent mixed with water. It makes the glass surface slippery, which makes it easy to use a rubber squeegee. Stubborn stains can be removed by using white vinegar mixed with equal parts of water. Soak a part of the cleaning cloth with this solution, leave it on the stain for a few minutes, then rinse with water.
Use New Squeegee Blades
Like most rubber products, old squeegee blades tend to become stiff and crack as it ages. These cracks can lodge particles that can cause scratches on the glass when used for window cleaning. Instead, buy replacement squeegee blades every time you clean your windows. Replacement blades are fairly cheap and can be purchased in rolls, so there’s no reason to risk scratches on the window surface.
Check Your Windows for Easy Cleaning Features
Modern replacement windows, like the ones we offer at Renewal by Andersen, have features that make them easy to clean. Depending on the window style, window sashes can be removed, tilted or reached around the hinges. In addition to convenience, these features make the windows safer to clean, as you won’t have to use a ladder to clean them from the outside.
