Fibrex actually starts from all the wood windows manufactured by the Andersen® Corporation. The company’s manufacturing process results in pieces of wood that are too small to be used in other parts of a window, so these wood pieces are reclaimed, making up 40% of the composite material by weight.
The other 60% that makes up Fibrex is a polymer specifically created by the company. This mix results in a window framing material that combines the best attributes of wood and vinyl sliding windows: energy efficiency, durability, sustainability and maintenance ease.
The Process
Since the Andersen Corporation started reclaiming wood fibers from their production line, the company has prevented the harvesting of nearly 90 million board feet of lumber. The Fibrex manufacturing process goes like this:
1. Wood fibers are heated to remove moisture.
2. Once the wood fibers are dry, the proprietary polymer is heated then combined with the wood fibers.
3. When mixed, wood and polymer molecules come together to form an entirely new compound.
4. The compound passes through an extruder, allowing the creation of virtually any window frame shape and the application of any color.
