Effective Tips to Clean Your Windows in Spring

Spring is the perfect time to do deep cleaning of your windows, removing dust, dirt and other debris built up over winter months. Keeping your windows clean helps improve their appearance, allowing your home to take advantage of their energy-efficient qualities in time for the warmer months. In this post, Renewal by Andersen® of Kansas City shares some tips to help you clean your windows during spring.

Gather the Supplies

To clean your windows, you’ll need some basic supplies. Have these on hand before you start:

  • Cleaning Solution – Soapy water made from washing detergent or dishwashing soap is enough for most vinyl and finished wood products.

  • Squeegee – One with a rubber blade and adjustable handle is best to remove excess water during cleaning.

  • Clean Rags – Microfiber cloths work great and won’t leave lint particles behind like other fabrics.

Cleaning the Windows

Preparation is key to smooth, hassle-free window cleaning. Keep these things in mind before and during the process:

  • Remove Any Screens – Most window screens can be removed, so you have unhindered access to the glass panes. Clean them with a damp cloth and mild soap if necessary before reattaching them after cleaning is complete.

  • Wipe Down the Frames – Using a soft cloth and soapy water, gently wipe down frames until any dirt, debris, or dust has been removed. You can conveniently use these on Fibrex® products from Renewal by Andersen.

  • Vacuum Away Dirt – Use a vacuum attachment to remove stubborn particles of dirt or dust around crevices, corners and other hard-to-reach places on windows and frames that cannot easily be reached with wipes alone.

Tips for Effective Glass Wiping

Apply your cleaning solution to a microfiber cloth or rag and work from the top down. Move horizontally across the windows in straight lines until the glass is covered evenly. Next, wipe the windows using medium pressure with a dampened cloth or rag, wiping away dirt and smudges from left to right until the pane is clear. Lastly, use the squeegee to clean the glass panes. Start at one side while pushing horizontal strokes to remove any soapy residue as you go over each window again. Follow up by polishing with a dry, lint-free cloth.

Finishing Up

Reattach any screens removed during preparation using screws or clips, depending on the design. Ensure they are securely in place before continuing with other tasks related to window cleaning.
