How to Spring-Clean Your Windows

It’s about time to open your windows again and breath in the fresh air of the spring season. After those cold winter days, you can now enjoy the beauty of nature through your windows. But before you savor the fresh air and marvel at the beauty of the blooming season, here are some maintenance tips for residential windows.

  1. Inside and Out

If you’re doing a DIY-cleaning, you can start by covering as much surface as you can. You may not access every part of your window, but it’s still a good idea to keep the panels and frame squeaky clean.

So first, open the window and pop out the screens (if there’re any) to wash them with soap and water. Clean the window glasses with high-quality glass cleaner and squeegee or microfiber cloth. Wipe down the window frames and sills. Then, vacuum or brush hard-to-reach areas.

  1.  Clean the Accessories

Don’t just focus on the window itself. Other accessories such as decorations, curtains and its rods, covers, blinds, and other things near your window that accumulates dust, grime or moisture. Wipe the dust and grime, wash or replace the fabrics, and vacuum upholstery and surrounding areas.

  1.  Check the Mechanism

If your windows are already old, there’s a good chance that some of its parts are already damaged or defective. Check the knobs, locks, hinges, jamb and operators if they still work. Make sure that your windows are still tightly sealed when closed. Because when moisture and dirt accumulate during winter, your windows can suffer from mechanical problems, especially for casement and sliding windows.

  1.  Call the Experts

While cleaning your window can sound like a good idea, you should consider the time needed to do so. If you have a lot of windows to cover, maybe calling the pros isn’t so bad after all. Plus, you can avoid doing over your work when you leave out some parts and end up damaging other parts instead. So before you even start removing the parts of your window, think about the amount of time you can commit first.
