How to Fix Rattling Windows

Rattling windows can be very annoying, and can cost you many a good night’s sleep. Fortunately, they can be fixed once you know what’s causing them. In today’s post, residential windows company Renewal by Andersen of Kansas City discusses the causes of rattling windows, and how they can be fixed.

What Causes Rattling Windows?

Rattling windows can be caused by one or more of the following:

Loose Window Glass — Loose glazing is common on traditional single-pane windows, particularly on glass that’s been set in the frame using putty. As the putty shrinks, the glass becomes loose and tends to rattle when hit by wind.

Loose Sashes — Sashes can become loose because of old or damaged hardware, or the sashes have become warped from exposure to temperature changes. Window sashes and frames made of composite, like our own Fibrex® material, are less prone to warping. This is an important feature when you have sliding windows, as the sashes will be less prone to getting stuck.

Worn-Out Weatherstripping — Weatherstripping is the strips of rubber or metal that protects the gaps between window sash and frame. It helps reduce air leaks and, consequently, heat loss during heating season. Weatherstripping can get worn out over time, which can result in gaps that may result in rattling.

How to Fix Rattling Windows

A fresh reapplication of caulk can help secure loose window glass on traditional windows. Note that reapplying caulk isn’t a permanent fix, as it gets worn out after several months. Hardware can be adjusted to reduce looseness of the sashes, however, it won’t address structural issues like warping. Worn-out rubber weatherstripping is easy to replace. Metal weatherstripping, on the other hand, will need to be replaced by a professional.

The best solution to rattling old windows investing in quality replacement windows. Renewal by Andersen replacement windows, in particular, have all the features that you need. Components such as reliable hardware, composite frames that are less prone to warping, and warranted components like weatherstripping can provide rattle-free operation throughout its service life.
