There are no shortcuts to thorough window cleaning, but there are ways to make it easier. Your local replacement window company Renewal by Andersen® of Kansas City shares some window cleaning tricks you probably don’t know about.
-
Use Two Scrubbers — Use two scrubbers, one for interior use and another for exterior use. Using separate scrubbers keeps outdoor pollutants, including bird droppings and pollen, from getting on the interior side of the windows. Additional tip: use two detailing rags, one for dirty areas like window sills, another for relatively cleaner areas like glass edges.
-
Common Household Products — While there are numerous window cleaning products on the market, you can achieve a thorough clean with a few household products. For low-maintenance windows like the replacement windows we offer at Renewal by Andersen, all you need is any liquid dish detergent mixed with water. It leaves the glass surface slippery, making it easier to clean with a rubber squeegee. For stubborn stains, spot-treat with a 1:1 mixture of vinegar and water, leave for a few minutes, then rinse.
-
Use New Squeegee Blades Every Time — Still using your old rubber blades? Using new ones prevents streaks. It also helps avoid scratches from debris that may have been stuck on the old blades. Rubber blades that are too wide may not have enough coverage. Choose a 12 to 14-inch blade to ensure proper grip and better control over coverage. Avoid using razor blades for removing stubborn dirt, as this could damage window coatings.
-
Magic Eraser Does the Trick — “Magic erasers,” marketed as a dry stain remover for floors and walls, can also remove old silicone caulk and water stains. This is particularly useful if you’re adding new sealing caulk, as it avoids using sharp implements like razor blades or metal spatulas. Make sure the area is clean before applying new caulking.
