At Renewal by Andersen of CITY, we’ve seen firsthand how advanced glass technology can transform homes. Our high-performance glass options are the result of years of research and development, combining cutting-edge materials science with innovative manufacturing processes. What makes these glass options stand out in terms of energy efficiency, durability, and overall performance? Science!

The Foundation: Low-E Coatings

At the heart of Renewal by Andersen’s high-performance glass is our advanced Low-E (low-emissivity) coating technology. These microscopically thin layers of metallic oxides are applied to the glass surface to reflect infrared light. This scientific approach allows visible light to pass through while blocking heat transfer.

Our Low-E coatings work on two levels:

  1. In winter, they reflect heat back into your home, reducing heat loss through windows.
  2. In summer, they reflect the sun’s heat away from your home, keeping interiors cooler.

The science behind this is based on the principles of thermal radiation. Different materials emit and absorb radiation at different rates. Our Low-E coatings are designed to have a low emissivity for long-wavelength infrared radiation, effectively reducing heat transfer through the glass.

Argon Gas Fill: Enhancing Insulation

Between the panes of our double and triple-glazed windows, we use argon gas fill. Argon is a noble gas that’s denser than air and has lower thermal conductivity. This scientific property makes it an excellent insulator.

When argon fills the space between glass panes, it significantly reduces heat transfer through convection and conduction. The atoms of argon move more slowly than those of air, reducing the transfer of energy between the interior and exterior panes. This results in better insulation and improved energy efficiency.

SmartSun™ Glass: Balancing Light and Heat

Our SmartSun™ glass option combines several of these technologies to provide an optimal balance of light transmission and heat control. It uses a spectrally selective Low-E coating that blocks 95% of UV rays while allowing 65% of visible light to pass through.

The science here involves carefully tuning the coating’s properties to achieve this balance. By selectively reflecting and absorbing specific wavelengths, SmartSun™ glass can reduce solar heat gain by up to 52% compared to standard dual-pane glass, without significantly darkening the glass or altering the view.

Durability Through Chemistry

The durability of our high-performance glass options is also rooted in materials science. We use a patented titanium dioxide coating that makes the glass easier to clean and stay cleaner longer. This hydrophilic coating causes water to sheet off the glass rather than beading up, taking dirt and debris with it.

Moreover, our Fibrex material, used in window frames, is a composite of wood fibers and thermoplastic polymer. This unique composition provides the strength and insulation properties of wood with the low-maintenance features of vinyl. The science behind Fibrex involves creating a material at the molecular level that combines the best properties of its components.
